I also thought his trick of sliding quickly up the low E string to, for example, the 12th fret, followed by a staccato pluck of the high B and E on the 12th, was a great rock and roll move. This is where the thumb (or flatpick) plays a constant root note. A good example of this is, "Suzie Q" by James Burton. Danny Gatton used this a lot, too.
